Cal's Pastoral Epistles

"Seen From Above"
April 8, 2009
I was sitting in a meeting downtown a few weeks ago. I happened to look
out the second floor window and noticed there was lots of activity on the
street below. A parade of fire engines came through the city and pulled into
the lot of a building just a block away. It must have been a false alarm
because they were not there very long.
There was a group of kids standing in front of the library. They were
smoking cigarettes. They were trying to get out of the rain. The entrance to
the building had a "No smoking" sign and so they were forced out under the
ledge.
I saw a man with a fishing pole come along with a plastic bag. I presumed
it was filled with fish. He stopped at the Chinese Restaurant and left it for a
moment to go inside. He came out a few minutes later with a man in an
apron. The man looked in the bag and then they both went inside. A few
minutes later the fisherman came out and strolled away with a smile on his
face.
I drive through town every day. Until I sat there that afternoon, I never
realized so much was happening. Later that day I thought about the fact that
God watches us and sees what's happening in our lives. He sees it from
above. He sees our coming and going. Sometimes he even makes an
appearance to offer us a blessing.
The truth is that God looks at our lives differently than we do. He sees them
from above. He can see where we have been and what lies on our horizons.
We don't have that vantage point. We only see what is right in front of us.
That is why we often get caught up in worry and fear about the future.
I think it is important to see things from God's vantage point. On Good
Friday the world looked dark and discouraging. God was nowhere in sight
and the future looked bleak. On Easter morning we learned the rest of the
story. God is aware of our situation and he has a plan. We celebrate Easter
because it reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
Not life nor death nor anything else in all creation. On that day we saw that
God could overcome even life's greatest obstacle to declare his love and
care for us.
So praise God for the risen Christ and the living hope that he we have
today. He is with us now forever.
God Bless! See you in Church. Cal
