"Pink Is Not My Color"
May 8, 2008
Whoever came up with the phrase, "pretty in pink" has never seen my
underwear. Yeah, that's right. I have a pair of pink underwear. I am very
fortunate that it is only one pair. Otherwise I would not have the luxury of
throwing them away. My wife would actually make me wear them if I had
messed up a whole load, not that there's anything wrong with that.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the washing machine and saw
that every towel and every article of delicate clothing was a nice shade of
pink. I have been doing laundry in our house for close to twenty years and
this has never happened before. The truth is with a house full of women I
have seen plenty of pink undergarments. At first I didn't think anything of
it. After all it was a set of towels and panties. It wasn't until I pulled out
MY BVD's that I realized that something was drastically wrong.
I know how these things happen. I stood there thinking it just didn't make
sense. I'm pretty smart when it comes to washing colors and whites. I
never put anything colorful, and especially red, in with the whites. I try to
keep colors separate. So at first glance there was no plausible explanation
for the gaffe.
That night I went in to confess my blunder to Lori. Confession is good for
the soul and its good in marriage too. Lori then revealed that there might
have been a tie dyed towel in the hamper. It seems Rachel and her friends
were having fun over the weekend making colored shirts. One purple/pink
towel got mixed in with the others and now you know the rest of the story.
I know we don't like to talk about sin, but I got to thinking about this last
night. It struck me most of us never intend to do something that is wrong
or sinful. We want to do things right. We want to find happiness in our
work and our relationships and with the people we see everyday. Yet every
once in a while something happens, a thought occurs to us, a temptation
pops up and we make a choice or do something that isn't right. Without
even thinking about it, that choice or decision usually begins to color our
world. One lie turns into web of deceit. One mistake takes on a life of its
own. The next thing you know you have pink underwear and you don't
even know how it happened.
Well here is the good news. God understands and he wants to help you and
me make it right. He invites us to turn to him and start over. The Prophet
Isaiah says it best: "Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the
oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the
widow. Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your
sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as
crimson, they shall be like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you will
eat the best from the land." (Isaiah 1:17-19)
Someone told me that a bottle of bleach will help make my situation right. I
thank God that he has the right stuff to make our lives right too! The truth
is I can live with a pair of colored underwear but I can't live without his
love and grace in my life. So why not turn to God and let him do his thing.
God bless. See you in church. Cal
