Cal's Pastoral Epistles

"God Has A Place For You"
May 19, 2010
He said his name was Dan Kinnaman and he was with Baseball Chapel. I
listened to his message on my answering machine with growing excitement.
He said he was calling on behalf of the Connecticut Tigers. He explained
that he was the team chaplain for the Norwich team for last four years.
My first thought after hearing the message was that he wanted me to
serve as chaplain for the farm team of my beloved Detroit Tigers. Just the
thought of it sent my heart into palpitations. My thoughts were racing.
"How could I manage it with my hectic schedule? What would they need
me to do?"
I mentioned the call to a friend and he said "If that is what it is, then go
for it. Who knows? This could lead to a call to the BIG LEAGUES." Talk
about fantasy baseball: This message on my answering machine had me
walking on air and playing all kinds of scenarios in my head.
It took about a week of playing phone tag before I got Dan on the phone.
He was very excited. He told me about the team and its plans. Then he got
down to business. He told me he had checked out our web site and thought
I might be able to help him out.
"Do you speak Spanish?" he said. " I noticed that you have an Hispanic
service at the church and we are looking for someone to work with our
Latino players." "N-n-n-no" I stuttered trying to catch my heart as it sank.
"Pastor Jorge is the man who serves that congregation."
I tried not to let him hear the disappointment in my voice as I told him
about Pastor Jorge and his wonderful manner with the people. I told Dan
that Jorge would be perfect for the role he was trying to fill and that I
would pass on the message.
Needless to say, I won't be working with the Tigers. Maybe that's just as
well because I am their biggest fan after all. Later that afternoon I ran into a
man who stopped me and told me how much he enjoyed my weekly
columns. He said, "You have a real gift for this. I hope you keep it up for a
long time."
Once again I was reminded that each of us has a gift. It may not be
where we think or want it to be but it will be where God needs us most.
Embrace the ministry you have. It may be that of an encourager at work or
school. It may be the job of teaching or nursing or managing. But when you
do these jobs for the sake of our Lord, they bring blessings to all. So get out
there and play ball!
God bless. See you in church. Cal
